Pat Langford Art and Craft of Chichester Cathedral
At this month's meeting Pat gave us a fascinating and very informative talk on the history of Chichester Cathedral and the work of George Bell (Bishop) and Walter Hussey (Dean) using modern artists to create a bright, beautiful and thought-provoking edifice to the Glory of God.

Congratulations...
...to Sarah, who won our religious artifacts competition with her leather case of two prayer books.
May

Crafty Ladies have been busy making these beautiful paper flowers. They really enhance this pretty table setting.
Well done, ladies.

Despite very stiff competition Nikky was a worthy winner of this month's competition with her beautiful posy of lily-of-the-valley and borage flowers. What a very talented lady she is!

Our resolutions evening began with an excellent talk from Emma Fletcher about the ways in which Turning Tides, a local charity, can work with the homeless to provide them with a way out of their dire predicament. She emphasised the ways in which women are affected by homelessness, and we voted unanimously to adopt this resolution.
Sara presented Emma with a cheque, and we have adopted Turning Tides as our chosen charity this year.

Pinks Parlour
was the venue for our latest outing, and what a treat it was.
Georgia took us through the process she uses to make her delicious artisan ice-cream. We created a variety of sundaes to enjoy, and took a tub of our favourite flavour home. Thanks Georgia x
April

Nikky put together excellent kits for our first attempts at this craft which originates frpm Japan. Sashiko can be used for mending holes in garments or for embellishment.

Manners Please Dearest
with David Allen
We were delighted, at our meeting this month, to have enrolled in an exclusive London finishing school in the mid 19th century to polish up our manners and knowledge of Victorian etiquette.
With the aid of a chair; a teacup, saucer and spoon; a book and a fan we gained an insight into the tips and tricks of Victorian society which would enable us to flourish as eligible young ladies.
It was a great night - some of us clearly have more to learn than others! David was, however, extremely patient with even the most wayward of his charges.

What lovely recognition of this fabulous annual effort. Every year we have more and more to be proud of.

Our Izzy Doll Tree
generated a lot of interest at this Year's Christmas Tree Festival, and visitors obviously approved, as by the end of the festival all the lovely little characters had found new homes.
Well done Crafty Ladies and other contributors.
You are stars.

November
Foliage, Fizz and Fun
Our wreath-making evening was brilliantly organised by Nikky, and we all came away with wreaths which will wonderfully enhance our Christmas decor.
Thanks Nikky.

Hi Gill,
Was over in Findon earlier and just wanted to congratulate you and your fellow poppy makers on the fantastic display – it all looked beautiful and peaceful in the sun today and what a fitting tribute.
Best wishes,

Mary How 1941-1987
Mary was born in Victoria, Australia, and emigrated as a young woman to the UK, where she met and married Raymond How. Mary and Raymond had two children, Jeremy and Victoria, and lived in West Chiltington in West Sussex, where they had many friends.
Mary was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 1984 and despite a brave battle against the disease she died in 1987, at the early age of 46.
Raymond How described Mary as a “super person, who was so brave in adversity, who gave so much love, warmth and happiness to so many, wherever she set foot and to whomever she befriended.” He said that people from all walks of life were captivated by her Aussie charm.
Mary’s son, Jeremy, explains that “on the night my mother died her GP and my father founded The Mary How Trust, an organisation they hoped would allow the early detection of malignant and other diseases”.
Early detection could have saved Mary’s life. We’re passionate about screening as many people as possible and catching illness at the most treatable stages.

July

We welcomed the return of Sheila Willis, this time to talk about the seaside
and its rich history, characters and many foibles.
June

Nine of our members enjoyed a visit to the home of 'Smock Alley'' wine, where they tasted three delicious varieties. They had the chance to visit the vineyard, and learn about the work involved in creating this excellent English sparkling wine.
Jonathan Cox, our June speaker, gave a fascinating insight into the world of policing based on his personal knowledge.
For more information about Jonathan and his 'Nostril' book series click here.
Jonathan was very impressed with the police memorabilia which was brought to our competition table, so well done, and thanks, to all contributors.

May

A street party theme prevailed at our May meeting, where there was an abundance of Union Jacks, bunting, land army girls and masses of red, white and blue attire, completed by a very tempting array of delicious cakes served on vintage-style tiered plates.
Additionally, we went a little way towards learning to save lives, with a video and discussion related to this year's resolution 'Bystanders can be Lifesavers'. We hope to have future opportunities to demystify the use of the defibrillators around the village and make members more confident in their ability to help in an emergency.
April

Izzy dolls and pompoms, made by our lovely group of crafty ladies, and destined for the Christmas Tree Festival at St John the Baptist Church this December (you can never start too early!)

Our Izzy dolls will be distributed after the festival.

Beautiful bags and boxes made by the Crafty Ladies, led by very talented Andrea.
Our President, Sara, greeted Chris Hodges, our advisor, to our March meeting and AGM. Roundups of the past, very successful, year, were given by Paddy (treasurer) and Sharon (Secretary). Sara was unopposed as President, and will continue in that role. Wendy and Nikky are new committee members, and we are all looking forward to their input.

February

Very well done to all the lovely WI members who cooked, served and generally helped with February's Light Lunch.

Our birthday meeting got off to a splendid start with the pop of prosecco corks followed by the presentation of a cheque for £1068 to Mick Dicker from Findon Community Swimming Pool. Mick thanked everyone for this splendid amount which we raised through our fund-raising efforts over the past year. A number of the ladies are looking forward to taking a dip in the refurbished pool once the weather warms up.

We were greatly impressed and entertained by the skill of our speaker for the evening, Margaret Watson, who played a wonderful medley of tunes on her concert harp. Margaret explained the mechanics of the harp, and how she had wanted to play the harp since childhood - much to her parents' dismay. Margaret's programme started with 'Jerusalem', and concluded with 'Happy Birthday' - perfect!
January
Our year got off to a fantastic start with our fun auction. Sara made a great auctioneer (complete with that hat!) and we raised £179.50, taking our total raised for Findon Community Swimming Pool to over £1000!
Well done, ladies!

December

We had a great Christmas meeting with wine, a festive quiz and song.
The hall looked wonderfully decorated, and we were all so proud of what we have achieved this year.
Thanks to Sara for leading us to new heights.

Nikky
led a fantastic evening of festive wreath-making, complemented by a glass of fizz, stollen and mince pies.

Nikky provided a fantastic assortment of foliage and adornments for our wreaths, and the ladies were justifiably proud of their excellent results.
Thanks so much, Nikky.

The village hall decked with stars. Congratulations to Andrea who co-ordinated and led the Christmas theme this year, and to all the ladies who contributed their star-making efforts.
